Local portal Malaysian Digest revealed that several youths in Malaysia feel that the RM200 phone rebate by the government can be used for better things.

According to the report made by the portal, the youths interviewed understand the goodwill of the government, but think that the bulk of the money could have been channelled to a more productive cause, with some citing rebates on laptops, internet bills or discounts on cars as their preferred options.

Prime Minister Datuk Najib Razak last Friday announced that the government plans to give a one off RM200 rebate to youths aged 21-30 for the purchase of a 3G smartphone. The move will involve youths earning below RM3000 monthly, and will be coordinated by Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and telco companies.
