A worker was killed when a two-storey shop building which was under construction collapsed at IJM Batu 6 near Sandakan yesterday.
The building collapsed at about 5.45pm. However, rescue operations were only conducted about 8pm after the Fire and Rescue Department was informed when the worker was realised missing.
Sandakan district police chief ACP Rowell Marong identified the victim as Mustafa Mustamin, 20, an electrician.
The body was then sent to the Duchess Of Kent Hospital for a post-mortem.
Meanwhile, Sandakan Fire and Rescue station head, Jemishin Ujin, said 19 firemen in two engines and a multi-purpose vehicle rushed to the scene after receiving a distress call at 8.03pm.
The firemen managed to find the victim, who was trapped in the rubble, at 10.04pm, he added.
