Santubong MP Datuk Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar was quoted as saying that works on the surau project in Gersik is set to continue after the status of the cables underneath the site is determined. The surau project caught attention of many after villagers made a peaceful demonstration to show their frustration over the delayed project.
According to the construction notice at the site, the surau was suppose to be in its final stages this month as it is to be ready by this coming March. However, the construction stalled without notice despite the completion date getting closer.
It was also reported that Wan Junaidi said that the surau in Gersik is ‘Kuching’s most expensive surau’ after elaborating that RM1.3 million will be spent on the project which was initially costing RM2.25 million. He was also quoted as saying that the rest of the allocation has been diverted to other mosque projects in Santubong and Muara Tebas.
