Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) and TT dotCom Sdn Bhd (TTdC) will work together to install undersea cables between Malaya, Sabah and Sarawak.
The project would be known as the ‘Sistem Kabel Rakyat 1Malaysia (SKR1M) and it is awarded by the Malaysia Multimedia and Communications Commission (MCMC).
SKR1M is actually part of the governments pledge to improve internet access in Sabah and Sarawak which was announced during 2013 budget. The project would see Sarawak having three landing points with Sabah obtaining one.
Connections via undersea cable would be made via Kuching to Mersing, and Kota Kinabalu to Chreating, and the cables used would be fiber optic ones.
According to a document we obtained from the MCMC, both TM and TTdC would be sustaining the cable for a good 20 years after its completion as the project is a government-private initiative. The record also shows that the project cost some RM850 million to be completed, and it would be done within three years.
