The Sarawak government is keen to set up its own Sarawak telco (telecommunication company).

Its chief minister, Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said that the request had been made to Minister of Communications and Multimedia Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah, to give Sarawak the licence equivalent to other telcos.

The Sarawak government hoped that by having a telco license, it can start covering areas in Sarawak which aren’t covered with internet.

Abang Johari was quoted as saying that current telcos were not interested to operate in rural areas due to the lack of business despite the fact that SMA (Sarawak Multimedia Authority) had built 170 telecommunication towers.

Abang Johari said that if the Sarawak government had a telecommunication licensee, it could serve these unprofitable area.

The Sarawak chief minister also noted that the Sarawak government is planning to build 1,300 telecommunication towers to solve internet connectivity in Sarawak.
