Open burning culprits to face stern action

Those resorting to open burning as a means of waste disposal risk facing stern action from the authorities with the Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) increasing its monitoring works to identify hot spots to curb open burning during the prevailing dry weather.

Open burning has been identified as one of the main causes to the annual haze problem in Sarawak with the state declaring a emergency back in 1997 due to the Air Pollution Index (API) exceeding 1,000.

The haze situation is also being blamed with the lack of enforcement in neighbouring Indonesia where open burning is rampant yearly despite the Indonesian government trying hard to curb it.
