The controversial amendment to the Evidence Act, which provides for presumption of fact in publication, is to ensure responsible online behaviour, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak said today.

Speaking to a room full of journalists and media members at the National Press Club Awards 2012, he said the amendment helps ensure responsible online reporting and deters harassment and slander by anonymous persons.

The premier said that the amendment is a modern and forward-looking piece of law.

Under the amendment, internet users are responsible for any content posted through their registered networks and handheld devices.

The law was passed in Parliament with both Pakatan Rakyat and Barisan National agreeing to it.
