The Home Ministry (KDN) will amend the Fees Act 1951 so that a higher penalty is imposed for the loss of the identity card, MyKad.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, however, said if a MyKad was lost for the first time due to carelessness or fire, a replacement could be considered.

Prior to this, Deputy Home Minister Datuk Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said 565,157 MyKads were reported missing as of Oct 31. Wan Junaidi did not rule out the cards were being used by illegals or sold to syndicates.

MyKad losses reported to the police would be investigated to ensure they were genuine and not related to cheating or syndicates, Ahmad Zahid said.

Some 500,000 MyKads were reported missing this year.
