The body of the man who fell into the Sarawak River from a jetty at the Kuching Waterfront on Wednesday night, was found last night.
He was found at 9.03pm not far from where he went missing.
Dubbed ‘Mr X’ by rescuers, the victim was last seen by a member of the public around 8pm falling into the river after pacing the length of the jetty moments earlier.
Those who witnessed the incident later told police that the man temporarily surfaced and waved his arms in distress before permanently disappearing underwater, with his slippers floating back up seconds later.
A police report was lodged immediately at the nearby Tourist Police kiosk, prompting a search-and-rescue operation comprising police, firemen and Civil Defence Department personnel.
A spokesperson from the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) later said that they had requested for the closure of the Kuching Barrage to facilitate the operation.
The search for the missing man was called off at midnight and resumed at 8am yesterday, with six Bomba frogmen joining in the operation.
The identity of the man, believed to be in his late 20s, is yet to be established.
