Kuching ready to put up a show

Kuching is putting on a show for what some here are describing as the most grand, colourful and biggest Malaysia Day parade ever tomorrow morning.

The Yang DiPertuan Agong Tuanku Abdul Halim Muā€™adzam Shah and his wife Raja Permaisuri Agong Tuanku Haminah Hamidun will be attending the 50th Malaysia Day celebrations in Sarawak.

The royal couple will be joined by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, members of the Federal Cabinet and members of the country’s foreign diplomatic corp.

One of the highlights of the parade is the flyover of the Royal Malaysian Air Force’s Russian-made Sukhoi fighter jets, which has become the talk of the town.

The thundering roar of the fighter jets during rehearsals over the last few days added to the excitement and in many parts of the city traffic came to a standstill as motorists and pedestrians stopped to catch a glimpse of the jets.

This evening the King joined thousands of people on the banks of the Sarawak River at the popular waterfront to watch the river float.

The 3km-long waterfront, a sliver of landscaped garden by the Sarawak River in the heart of Kuching, has been spruced up with buntings, more plants and bright lights.
