Kem Badminton Astro (KBA), a sports outreach programme under the Astro Kasih’s corporate responsibility initiative had identified young potential badminton players from tryout sessions which was held in 6 locations across the nation between 17 May – 23 August 2014.

Over 1,500 participants from all over Malaysia took part in the sessions where the top 60 participants were then selected to undergo the intensive training session held from 13 September to 17 September 2014 at the Pioneer Badminton Academy, Kuala Lumpur. They comprise of 42 boys and 18 girls from Johor, Kedah, Kuala Lumpur, Negeri Sembilan, Perak, Penang, Selangor, Terengganu, Sabah & Sarawak.

During the intensive training session, participants were able to enhance their skills under the guidance of professional coaches i.e. Lee Wan Wah, Chan Chong Ming and Chew Choon Eng including former World No.1 badminton player Wong Choong Hann. Apart from the coaches, six of the last year’s Kem Badminton Astro participants to Japan returned as mentors under the Young Leadership programme.

Now that the intensive training in KL is completed, the four KBA head coaches are faced with the difficult task of reviewing and selecting 30 most outstanding participants for a two-week advanced intensive training session which will take place from 15 – 25 November 2014 in Dongguan, China as part of the of the collaboration between Astro Kasih and Li Yongbo Badminton School. The selected participants will be housed at the prestigious house of champions, Li Yongbo Badminton School in Dongguan, China. The academy, named after the head coach of the Chinese national badminton team, is led by principal Tang Xianhu, who is the renowned badminton coach behind great Chinese players such as Lin Dan. The academy and its highly credible team serves as a national team training base with one of the best training programmes in the world.

Through the Kem Badminton Astro programme, Astro Kasih hopes to provide young players with access to training venues and proper techniques with qualified coaches, international exposure as well as to continue to assist and nurture young talented players in enhancing their badminton skills.
