An 8.7-magnitude earthquake centred 33km beneath the ocean floor, around 495km from the provincial capital of Banda Aceh struck with tsunami warnings issued.

It was reported that the earthquake caused mild tremors in Penang island, Perak, Kedah, Seberang Perai and Klang Valley with tsunami and evacuation orders being issued by disaster prevention authorities in the southern Thai provinces of Phuket and Phangnga.

In Malaysia, those staying near the sea side are advised to stay away from the beaches and be in full alert for a tsunami.  Reports suggest that places particularly in Penang, Langkawi, Perak, Negeri Sembilan and Kedah may be hit by Tsunamis beginning at 9PM onwards tonight.

In December 2004, a 9.7-magnitude quake caused tsunamis across the Indian ocean killing over 230,000 people, with the most victims at Banda Aceh.

We hope everyone will be safe, and we pray for them.
