Malaysia’s under 23 team which made it to the quarter finals of the World University Games football competition in Kazan were almost immediately eliminated from any chance to advance into the semis after Japan pounded the Harimau Muda team 4-0.
Japan which had an impressive run prior to their qualification onto the quarter finals raced to 2-0 lead in the first six minutes with Jin Isumizawa and Teruhito Nakagawa finding the back of the net in the fifth and tenth minute.
Malaysia then kept the score at bay for the next seventy minutes but Kazuki Nagasawa and Shuhei Akasaki ensured Malaysia could not salvage anything from the game when they put a goal each for Japan in the 80th and 83rd.
Despite the defeat, Harimau Muda did better than their last outing in the games by ending the tournament at the Quarter-finals.
Japan will play the winner of the France – Ireland match for a place in the final, while Malaysia will play the loser in the 5th-8th classification semis.
