The Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) has embarked on an ambitious plan to roll out free Wifi services in selected areas in Kuching City.
Among the first few targetted areas to enjoy such services would be the stretch from the Kuching Waterfront to Padang Merdeka, with future plans to include the Kuching International Airport and Sarawak General Hospital.
According to The Borneo Post, there are also plans to increase coverage to Satok and Petra Jaya in the near future, with internet speeds running from 5 – 15Mbps.
The free Wifi coverage is a joint venture between DBKU and PPTelecom under the DBKU Metropolitan Free Wifi project.
It is not the first kind of effort to Wifi up Kuching City as previous efforts by DANAWA. However, the project by DANAWA never really took off and has since not been well taken up by the public to date.
That said, it would be interesting to see what can this new project would do differently in order to succeed.
