England were fortunate to escape a possible defeat after they held France to a 1-1 draw in the opening Group D match of the EURO 2012 tournament last night.

Despite an obvious France domination in the game, the Three Lions scored first as S. Gerrard swayed in a beautiful free kick to awaiting J. Lescott, whom made no mistake to connect the cross into the goal.

However, England’s joy was short lived as a wonderful team effort between F. Ribery, Malouda and Evra saw S. Nasri finishing the ball off with a low shot into the bottom left corner from outside the area to put the game level.

In another game, Z. Ibrahimovi’s early goal in the second half of the Ukraine-Sweden game failed to help Sweden secure the full three points as A. Shevchenko scored a double in the span of six minutes to give his team the win.
