The Borneo Post reported that the Sarawak People’s Party (PRS) is preparing it’s cyber-troopers for the general elections.
According to the popular daily, Party president Tan Sri Dr James Masing noted that social media was growing more and is more important by the day when compared to mainstream media in terms of readership, and hence the need for Sarawak BN to not repeat the mistake of underestimating the impact of social media in shaping public opinion.
The cyber troopers which are also put under a unit called ‘Unit Media Baru’ or UMB is said to be very capable as they are trained by what Masing says to be “Malaysia’s best bloggers”.
The task of UMB is to counter allegations and slanderous statements against BN in cyberspace, and to give the general public the true picture of what was happening in the country.
PRS’s UMB is a five-member team comprising party members which are selected based on their interests and wide ranging knowledge about political issues and happenings in the state.
The unit was a voluntary, with the cost for training and equipment born by the members themselves.
