Tourism and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz revealed that English Premier League side Cardiff City advertised the name ‘Malaysia” on their jerseys for free when the team was playing in the Division One of the English League last season.

According to him, the Tourism Ministry then agreed to pay RM15mil worth of jersey sponsorship of the Cardiff Football Club after the club agreed to change the wording to “Visit Malaysia” for their new season in the Premier League.

Nazri further elaborated that the ministry feels that the expenditure is justified because going by the calculation of the RM15mil for advertisement, it has brought in tourism receipts amounting to RM65bil, adding that some 420,000 British tourists visited the country last year.

Nazri further said that the deal had nothing to do with the fact that Vincent Tan was the owner of the club, but rather was due to the fact that it generated massive promotion for the country.
