A local daily quoted Social Development Minister Tan Sri William Mawan Ikon as saying bronze medallist Pandelela Rinong Pamg is the best diving athlete from Sarawak, and she is likely to be the last.

The minister said the state had no facilities to accommodate the sport, despite having produced many aquatic athletes.

He was further quoted as saying “All aquatic facilities that we have are substandard,” and he added that the newly built National Aquatics Centre of Excellence in Kuching was also not up to standard.

Mawan however said that the state government was planning to build an aquatic centre in Petra Jaya in the next few months, as he further added that the plans have already been finalized.
