Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said that opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s statement for borrowers of the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) loans not to pay back their loans is a populist and irresponsible statement.

Khaled said that he would explain the soonest possible about the implications of not repaying the PTPTN loans, while adding that it is against his religion (Islam) to not pay debts incurred.

Anwar was quoted by BERNAMA to have said that PTPTN borrowers needed not to pay back their loans because “if Pakatan wins the coming general election, the loans will be abolished within a year.”.

He was quoted as saying so at a ceramah at Permatang pauh, Penang.
