Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek has announced that his ministry will provide some 400,00 teachers in Malaysia with free 1Malaysia netbooks.
The announcement was made as part of the Teacher’s Day celebration.
According to Shabery, the netbooks will be given under the 1Malaysia Netbook program, which has since distributed some 1.7 million netbooks since it was introduced in 2010.
Shabery added that the Cabinet has approved the allocation for teacher in government secondary school while adding that this was the Government’s gift to all teachers for this year’s Teachers’ Day celebrations.
Although the move is long overdue, some feel that the 1Malaysia netbooks would do little to help teachers whom will need a proper laptop for their jobs. This was mainly due to the fact that netbooks, in particular the 1Malaysia netbooks, are of low specifications, and do not come with the much needed optical drive.
