A reporter from a local daily has slammed local social media users whom were behind a ‘troll’ (A troll is someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as a forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking readers into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion) whom said that Swee Kang (a popular local Ice Kacang outlet) is giving out free Ice Kacang to celebrate Pandelela Rinong’s success.
The reporter of the article titled “Grow up, pranksters” said that he is all for social media, but “riding on Pandelela’s moment of greatness to mislead others is definitely not going to win creators of social media content any new fan.”
He further said that it was really more unfortunate and disappointing that these pranksters should have used their collective effort to explore Pandelela’s life story instead of releasing such troll.
Last Friday, popular troll website ‘Blog Serius’ released a news claiming that Swee Kang Ice Kacang will be offering free ice kacang to celebrate Pandelela’s victory at the Olympics. The article titled “Serius Metroll – Swee Kang Kuching Bakal Beri Ice Kacang Percuma” was categorized as ‘Serious Metroll’ and gained over 860 LIKES on Facebook.
The blog which has won the 2011 DiGi WWWOW Awards for ‘Best Humor Category’ also trolls about huge figures such as Prime Minister Najib Razak, Shinji Kagawa andPresident Obama.
It is understood that while most social media savvy internet users in Malaysia and Kuching already knew that it was a troll site, and that the news was a hoax, some newer users were left unimpressed.
