DiGi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd’s 3G coverage in the state has reached 35%, says its business and environment management head Sumitra Nair.
This places DiGi 3G coverage in Sarawak on par with Maxis, with Celcom Axiata Bhd still in the lead. DiGi was among the latest telcos to be given government’s approval to begin 3G services.
In early last year, DiGi and Celcom entered a mobile voice and Internet services infrastructure collaboration, which is said to save RM2.2bil for both parties over the next decade.
Sumitra said 2G coverage was at 90% of Sarawak, while infrastructure for next generation higher speed mobile Internet — known as 4G or LTE — was being built across Sarawak, starting in Miri.
She said next generation mobile Internet connections would improve services like video calls and other aspects of multimedia usage.
