Bryan Nickson Lomas gets gold at Canadian Open

Bryan Nickson Lomas of Kuching, Sarawak and his pair and Huang Qiang captured gold for the men’s 3m springboard diving at the Canadian Open in Montreal.

Reigning Commonwealth Games champions Reuben Ross and Alexandre Despatie had to settle for silver with 419.58 points while Mexicans Rommel Pacheco-Jonathan Rovalcaba took the bronze on 388.71.

The Malaysians had a slim lead after the first two compulsory dives but found themselves trailing by five points after the Canadians scored 80.58 for their first optional effort.

Despite only paired recently, the Bryan-Huang Qiang regained more points in the final two attempts to clock 431.31 points, and hence becoming the first Malaysian male divers to win gold in the World Grand Prix circuit.

The win is a certain boost for both divers as they prepare for the London Olympics.
