Kuching City North Commission (DBKU) is confident of allocating about 31km of bicycle lanes by the end of this year to satisfy the growing interest in cycling among the locals.
21km of the lane would be allocated from Jalan Bandar Baru Semariang to Jalan Astana and 5.3km from Jalan Hashim Jaafar to Bulatan Datuk Abang Kipali Bin Abang Akip in the first phase.
The second phase involving 4.7km would be built at Jalan Demak with some RM600,000 spent to build a 7km bicycle lane in the vicinity of the State Mosque and Pustaka Negeri Sarawak.
Another 35km of bicycle lanes would be built next year in which DBKU is expected to spend between RM500,000 and RM600,000 for the lanes which come complete with shelters for the cyclists to rest.
